THE GREAT GATSBY

At first I didn't think this book would of been a love story murder... I actually, to tell you the truth, had no idea what this book was going to be about. Like why was there a random naighbor, Gatsby, standing in the yard looking out at a green light? Or when Tom Buchanan went inside for a phone call and his wife, Daisy, got all sad :( I finally understood what had happend after Jordan Baker explained to Nick.

Fitzerald put "The Great Gatsby" in first and third person of one of the characters, Nick. I enjoyed reading this book but it wasn't one of my favorites :( I liked how Fitzerald seperated each one of his characters with different personalities. Like Tom; he has a wife but on the other hand a secret lover? Ya that's not right... Daisy; she's married to Tom even though she knows about Tom's secret lover but she doesn't say much about the issue. She also kills Myrtle by hitting her with a car :'( Nick; he stays to himself and doesn't get in other peoples business. Jordan; she is very career involved... Each one is very different and i enjoyed that about this book.

Once i relized all the details in the story and everyone had there drama going on; like Gatsby's murder, Myrtle's death and when Daisy turned Gatsby down :( i really thought she would of went for him instead of Tom... When Fitzgerald explained how she didn't want to marry Tom and how she kinda got tricked into it. That's what I thought she was going to think about when she was making her desition and how Tom had Myrtle, his other lover, and how Gatsby just loved her. I guess girls are just fools when it comes to that.... Hmmm?

  1. Well I would have to say that you see everything in the story having a sad ending to it. I can see where you get that but I personally think that everything eventually turns out in the end. I do understand why Daisy picked Tom, she did not like the partying ways of Gatsby and even though Tom cheated and "tricked" Daisy into marrying him he was the kind of guy that she wanted. The rich and proper man that would always be there to show her off.

  2. Ha! I didn't even connect the dots. You brought up the first chapter of the book, when Gatsby is staring out at the green light. I never realized until just now that that's what he was doing in the "unquiet darkness", thank you for that.
I think the reason Daisy picked Tom was because Tom could keep her safe. Daisy was attracted to Gatsby because of his big mansion, and expensive shirts. But after Myrtle's death, Gatsby was at large and I think that's the reason Daisy crawled back to Tom's safety.
But I do, too, wish that she would've went with Gatsby. Tom was being unfaithful, and he didn't deserve to be in a relationship with Daisy.

  3. I think that Daisy went back with Tom and left Gatsby was because she is a very materialistic person and didn't want to worry about having an unstable life. At first I didn't think Daisy would leave Gatsby either though, because she seemed to be such a loving character towards Gatsby.

  5. I was also really disappointed that Gatsby and Daisy didnt end up together, that was the only part I really hated about that book. But I can see why Daisy picked I think the only reason she didnt end up with Gatsby was because he died:(. I also agree with you everthing works out in the end.

  6. Ashley,
I like how you stated that all of the characters were very different in the story. I agree with you on how that aspect of the novel made the story very interesting. I also love how you ended your blog. However, I don't think Daisy (when you said girls) was necessarily a fool. Even though I was sad that Daisy didn't end up with Gatsby, Daisy did not like Gatsby's partying ways, and she felt safe with Tom. I do however think if Gatsby was not murdered that he would've changed for Daisy. I feel that Tom doesn't deserve Daisy because of his unfaithfulness. Overall, well said Ashley:)

  7. I think all of the characters are crazy! Okay, now that that is out of my system... We see some very egotistical, selfish, uncertain, and fearful characters. Look at what each character does. I can't help but question why each character does what he or she does (I know, this goes against my post about not questioning motives, but Nick does give us a lot of the whole story). One thing is for certain, thought, none of the characters were happy with the life they had made for themselves. The grass isn't always greener.

  8. Tom didn't trick Daisy into marrying him. She married him because she wanted to. I am glad that Daisy stayed with Tom because Gatsby would have been driven insane. Gatsby loved her, but she only liked the attention and being worshiped. Also she liked having people do anything she asked. Tom and Daisy are perfect for each other. They are both conniving children, who use people and discard them and don't accept any responsibility for their actions.
